[Impressions] We spent a few days with the Super NES Mini

Friday morning, arriving at the editorial office, a silence of death reigned in the premises. My colleagues, who are so quick to send themselves sluices like peanuts in an aperitif, did not utter a word and looked at each other as a faience dog over their screens. When I approached my office, I swear I heard two grunting, before I saw them glancing at me to pass death for Sister Smile. Indeed, they had just learned that the Super NES Mini had arrived, and that I was recovering it for the weekend to try it. – Extract from the Memoirs of an editor in hostile zone

Before we look at what the animal contains in the belly, let us stop on the coating. With dimensions of 13 x 11 x 4 cm, the Super NES Mini is more or less the same size as the NES Mini (our prints), which should not overload your TV cabinet.

At the aesthetic level, the Super NES Mini takes again the design of the Super NES classic. We thus find the shades of gray, the rounded shapes and the buttons. Only the Eject key is purely decorative, as is the cartridge port. The Power and Reset buttons are used to switch the console on and off, and to access the emulator menu (see below)

The joystick ports are protected by a cache on the front of the console.

Levers and other cables

As we approach the controllers, let's talk about the cable of these last. The main complaint to the NES Mini is the length of the handle wire, which is too short (75 cm). Nintendo seems to have heard complaints from the players as the Super NES Mini joysticks pull 1.43 m of cable. This is less than the 1.50 m advertised by Nintendo (to get this size, add the length of the controller) but is much nicer than the NES Mini.

Another good point for Nintendo, the Super NES Mini is sold with two controllers. What after all is logical given the number of multiplayer games that the console (9 of 21).

By contrast, what Nintendo still does not include is a USB charger. We finally wonder whether adding a charger to the box of the New 2DS XL (our impressions) is no more a production error than the sign of a change of policy on the part of Nintendo .

With the Super NES Mini, you will find a micro USB cable (without power supply) and an HDMI cable, both long by 1.50 m

The emulator

If you were expecting big changes regarding the emulator, you will be disappointed. It is more or less the same as that of the NES Mini.

There are 3 display options: "4: 3", "Cathodic" (for nostalgic hardcores) and "original definition", as well as the drop-down menu for games. The backup system, which allows up to 4 games to be recorded on each game, is also back, as well as having to press the Reset button to access the main menu.

The main novelty is the Replay mode. Once you have saved your game, you can rewind it. You can return up to 50 seconds backward by 10 seconds. Perfect for recovering a forgotten object in a game like Donkey Kong Country .

History of filling the awful black bands on either side of the main screen, Nintendo has included twelve frames.

The Line-up

In addition to the collection toy side, the Super NES Mini will be interested in its line-up. It includes 21 titles. As with the NES Mini, you will not (at least officially) have the option to add more games.

Anyway, almost half of the games chosen by Nintendo are multiplayer. You'll be able to stick donuts on Street Fighter 2: Turbo shoot you on Super Mario Kart or cooperate to wrap up Final Fantasy 3 Final Fantasy VI but Nintendo has retained the American title) or Secret of Mana .
The Super Mario World or The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past the Super NES Mini releases the exclusivity of Star Fox 2 . Thus, by completing the first level of Star Fox the player can unlock the canceled Nintendo game shortly before its release in 1995.

Here is the complete list of Super NES Mini games:

Super Mario World, Super Mario World, Super Mario World, Super Mario RPG, Legend of the Seven Stars, Super Mario Kart, Legend of the Seven Stars Zirda: A Link to the Past, Super Ghouls'N Ghosts, Earthbound, Contra 3: The Alien Wars, Super Punch-Out !!, Mega Man X, Kirby's Super Star, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Street Fighter 2 Turbo: Hyper Fighting

The most nostalgic among us will regret the absence of Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles: Turtles in Time Sim City ] Killer Instinct .

Once again, Nintendo targets our fiber nostalgia with Super NES Mini. Sold with 80 dollars in the United States (so surely 79.99 euros), this miniature version is the ideal gift for young players, who can discover the games that have made their elders vibrate, as for the thirties who can relive Super Mario Kart and a glass of Banga.

This is a video of a young man who has been playing for a long time.
