In the rumor mill, the SoC has often appeared: For example, it was expected at times that in Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL could put a fresh Qualcomm Snapdragon. Only now, however, has Qualcomm officially launched its new high-end processor: the Snapdragon 845 is again being produced in a 10-nanometer process at partner Samsung, relying on the X20 modem, which also features the Snapdragon 835
Unfortunately, Qualcomm is still silent on many details, such as the performance differences in direct comparison with the predecessor SoC. However, it promises improvements in the area of camera support, virtual reality and artificial intelligence.
Does the latter mean that Qualcomm, like Huawei, might integrate a dedicated NPU on the Kirin 970? Here we have to wait for more concrete details. The current Qualcomm Tech Summit in Hawaii continues until December 8, 2017. Anyway, Xiaomi confirmed directly at the event that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 will drive the upcoming flagship of the manufacturer, so probably the Mi7.
In addition, Qualcomm invited several other manufacturers to the stage – such as Asus, Microsoft and AMD. So Qualcomm wants to intensify the partnership with AMD. Techniques from Qualcomm will be used in upcoming AMD Ryzen. Asus wants to release notebooks and convertibles with Microsoftand Snapdragon SoCs under the banner "Always Connected". A first example is the Asus NovaGo, which still relies on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and not yet on the new Snapdragon 845.
HP in turn has the Envy X2 in stock, which also uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and offers a battery life of up to 20 hours. Microsoft is using the new "Always Connected" banner to universally promote PCs that use the Qualcomm SoCs to work energy-efficiently, power up quickly, and potentially reduce costs for IT departments. Here you just want to go forward with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845.
Exciting plans, I think. However, one must now wait to see what is really being implemented in practice at the end of the festive marketing speeches. Finally, Microsoft, Qualcomm and partners also long hype around notebooks and convertibles with the Snapdragon 835, first devices are only recently available and the bandwidth is very manageable. Maybe the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 can build up the necessary pressure here. As soon as there are more details about the SoC, we will copy it here for you.
