Code of Conduct for Torch bearers of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay

All Torch bearers shall meet the following requirements:

1. Torch bearers must be 14 years of age. If the Torch bearer is less than 18 years of age, his/her guardian must sign the Application Form mentioned below.

2. Torch bearers must sign the BOCOG Torch bearer Application Form and Torch bearer Commitment Letter, and follow the instructions of BOCOG staff.

3. Torch bearers must be physically able (without causing themselves any physical harm) to complete the task of carrying the Olympic flame for a set distance.

4. Torch bearers are required to wear the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay uniform provided by BOCOG. The uniform should not be altered in any fashion except for sizing purposes.

5. No unauthorised accessories may be worn in the course of the relay. No costumed mascots will be allowed to carry the Olympic flame.

6. Torch bearers must run their designated legs. Torch bearers should arrive at the assigned location on time.

7. Torch bearers should go through security checks at entry and exit points to and from the relay event areas. They should be responsible for their personal safety and property security.

8. Torch bearers agree to be filmed, photographed or otherwise recorded during the course of the Torch Relay for the purposes of promoting the Torch Relay and the Olympic Movement free of charge.

9. No pets other than special needs companion animals are permitted to accompany Torch bearers during their relay legs.

10. No commercial or corporate advertising signs can be worn by Torch bearers.

11. Torch bearers cannot outwardly display any political and/or religious signs during the relay.

12. Without BOCOG approval, an individual's relay leg cannot be run by a group of Torch bearers.

13. In case of injury or illness whilst participating in the Torch Relay, the Torch bearer will receive relevant medical treatment. But the payment or reimbursement of the medical treatment will be borne by the Torch bearer.

14. BOCOG has the right to terminate Torch bearers' participation in the Torch Relay if they do not comply with relevant rules.


Prize Competition Terms & Conditions

1. Information on how to enter and prizes form part of these Terms and Conditions. By participating in this prize competition you are deemed to have read and accepted and be bound by these Terms and Conditions.

2. This promotion is open to UK residents aged 14 or over only. Express consent of a parent or legal guardian must be obtained where entrants are 18.  failure to obtain such consent will invalidate the entry.

3. Employees or agents of the Promoter or any of its group companies or their families or households or anyone professionally connected to this competition are not eligible to enter.

4. No purchase is necessary to enter.

5. To enter you will need to visit www.samsung.com/uk/samsungheroes , follow the prompts to the online nomination form, input the requested details and submit up to 400 words to explain how you or someone you nominate has risen above the obstacles of life to overcome adversity and become a ‘life hero’.

6. Entries must be submitted via this website online, to be received no later than 23:59 GMT 14th October 2007 (“the Closing Date”). You will receive e-mail notification of submission of your entry. Entries received after the Closing Date will not be eligible.

7. Applicants may nominate more than one person (a “Nominee”) but each Nominee may only be nominated once by an entrant. Each nomination must be submitted separately for each Nominee. Applicants must have the permission of the Nominee before making a nomination or ensure than their submission is anonymised. Applicants can nominate themselves only once.

8. There will be four winners (each a “Winner”) selected from entry submissions determined by a panel of judges. The judges shall determine the winner of the basis of which entry they consider to be the most worthy, based upon criteria such us:

  1. Triumph over adversity to achieve a better life;
  2. An extraordinary demonstration of courage;
  3. Inspiration to others to strive for excellence.

The decision of the judges will be final and the Promoter will not enter into any correspondence about the results.

9. The panel of judges will make their final decisions by 30th November 2007

10. The four Winners of this promotion will each take part in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay Event;

The first two winners will:

  • Run in the London leg of the OTR in 6th April 2008;*
  • Enjoy a  4-day trip for two to China to see the OTR;*
  • Be allowed to take one guest each to accompany them in London and China;*
  • Participate in the events promoting Olympic movement in London and China;
  • Have their stories published in The Sun newspaper.

The third winner will:

  • Run in the Guilin, China leg of the OTR on 4th June 2008;*
  • Be allowed to take one guest to accompany them in London and China;*
  • Attend the London leg of the OTR;*
  • Participate in the events promoting Olympic movement in London and China
  • Have their stories published in The Sun newspaper;

The fourth winner will:

  • Run in the Xi’an, China leg of the OTR on 7th July 2008;*
  • Be allowed to take one guest to accompany them in London and China;*
  • Attend the London leg of the OTR;*
  • Participate in the events promoting Olympic movement in London and China
  • Have their stories published in The Sun newspaper;

(*) - Expenses which relate to each Winners’ attendance at the Relay Event including return flights, accommodation, transport & transfers, tour & entertainment and operation costs will be covered by the Promoter, Samsung Electronics (UK) Limited.

11. The Promoter will use its reasonable endeavours to notify the Winners by email or telephone within 14 days of the decision of the judges.

12. Each Winner must confirm receipt of notification of winning within 14 days of the notification and confirm acceptance of their prize.

13. If the Winner does not respond as described in clause 12 above or confirms that they are unable to accept the prize, the Promoter reserves the right to award that prize to the next highest ranked entry.

14. There is no cash alternative to the prize. In the event that all or part of the prize is unavailable then the Promoter reserves the right to offer an alternative prize of equivalent value. The prize is non-transferable.

15. Entries must not be made through agents or third parties.

16. The name and town of residence of the winners will be published at www.samsung.com/uk/samsungheroes between 15th and 31st of December 2007 and will be available after that date upon receipt of a written request, together with a stamped addressed envelope, to Olympic Torch Relay Competition, 41b Beavor Lane, London, W6 9BL. The Promoter, acting reasonably, reserves the right to delay the timing of the notification of and/or the publication of the name and town of residence of the winner.

17. All Winners will be required to take part in Samsung promotional activities relating to the Olympics. Reasonable travel expenses and hotel accommodation will be paid for by the Promoter.

18. The Promoter, acting reasonably, reserves the right to change the panel of judges without notice, or to appoint more judges and the identity of the judges will be made available to anyone upon request to Craig.O'Boyle@bitepr.com

19. Applicants may nominate more than one Nominee. Each nomination must be submitted separately and may name only one individual Nominee. Applicants must have the permission of the Nominee before making a nomination. Applicants can nominate themselves and therefore become Winners.

20. During the Olympic Torch Relay event, Winners must wear the official torchbearer uniform provided by BOCOG and must not wear any accessories including any commercial identifications. Torchbearers may not express any political or religious affiliations or statements. Torchbearers cannot utilise in-line skates, skateboard, bicycle, or any other recreational device while carrying the flame.

21. Each Winner is responsible for ensuring that they have all necessary valid passports, any requisite visas, vaccinations, travel documentation and are eligible to travel. Winners may be required to present credit card at time of accommodation check in.

22. In the event of war, terrorism, state of emergency or disaster, the Promoter reserves the right to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the campaign.

23. By entering this Promotion you agree that you will not submit any content in your entry which: (a) is pornographic or contains any sexually explicit content (including nudity); (b) is defamatory, offensive, abusive or of an obscene or menacing character; (c) contains any images of or information about persons who have not consented to the submission of their images or such information; (d) otherwise offends against reasonable standards of taste and decency; or (e) has been copied from a third party or which infringes any third party copyright or other third party intellectual property right.

24. You hereby grant to the Promoter a worldwide, irrevocable, perpetual, royalty-free licence to copy, adapt and show in public the entry submitted by you.  You also consent to being identified in public as the author of the entry you submit.

25. You warrant that you are the person who created the content of any entry you submit in this prize competition and that if you are under the age of 18, you have received the express consent of a parent or legal guardian to take part in this prize competition.  You also confirm that you have waived all moral rights to your entry to the fullest extent permissible in law.

26. The Promoter shall have the right, where necessary, to undertake all such action as is reasonable to protect itself against fraudulent or invalid claims including, without limitation, to require further verification as to the identity, age, and other relevant details of an entrant.

27. The Promoter shall not be responsible for lost, misdirected, illegible, late, mutilated or altered entries.

28. The Promoter shall not be liable for any interruption to this Promotion whether due to force majeure or other factors beyond the Promoter’s control.

29. The Promoter reserves the right, acting reasonably and in accordance with all relevant legislation and codes of practice, to vary the terms and conditions of this Promotion.

30. The Promoter reserves the right at its absolute discretion to disqualify entries which it considers do not comply with these terms and conditions or any entrant who it reasonably believes has interfered with the fair running of this Promotion and/or the results thereof.

31. By entering this Promotion you agree to be bound by these terms and conditions.

32. This Promotion is governed by English law.

33. Instructions form part of these terms and conditions.
